Posted by Alexey in Life in the UK, Автомобили, Факты on Сентябрь 21, 2006

Sooner or later you all will be LinkedIn.

This is a message to everyone who is not registered in the LinkedIn social network of professionals. It will at least help you stay in touch with your former and current colleagues, classmates and friends and be informed of their career. It might also help you to find a good job or hire trusted professionals (or help the job/professionals find you). You may write recommendations to your colleagues and get recommended in return.
The major thing that impressed me is that I was able to find 3 ex-classmates already registered there as well as a good deal of my current friends who were keeping silence about it (bastards). Try it too to find out that everyone is already using it… except yourself ![]()
Leonid has already provided a sophisticated overview of what LinkedIn offers in his posting Get LinkedIn. Now. Seriously — please read if you are not convinced yet.
Sun Certified Web Component Developer for J2EE 1.4: passed
Posted by Alexey in Occurrences, Personal, Software Development on Сентябрь 13, 2006
I’ve passed another Sun Java exam today — Sun Certified Web Component Developer for J2EE 1.4 (310-081). The total score was 78% which is 54 correct answers out of 69. The pass mark is 62%. I’ve spent approximately 4 evenings and around 8 hours during a day for preparation. I used same «real exams» downloaded from Examcollection but this time they were real crap — about 2/3 of all questions were not relevant to the exam but instead were taken from some basic Java language exam. Don’t look at these — 319-081 is purely about Servlet/JSP technologies!
Subjects of Russian Federation
Since some of my English speaking friends sometimes ask about the status of various Russian subdivisions like republics, krais (territories), oblasts (regions) etc I suggest a discussion because I am not sure about the juristic status of these myself ![]()
Russia is divided in 88 subjects. Each subject is either a republic or krai or oblast. Republics (Chechnya, Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Bashkortostan etc) are most independent.
Extract/convert audio in an avi file
Posted by Alexey in Technology on Сентябрь 7, 2006
I need to re-sample sound track in an AVI video from 32Khz to 48Khz. Or at least extract it into a file. I tried VirtualDub which gives me an error «Audio samples XXXX-YYYY could not be read in the source. The file may be corrupted» somewhere in the middle of the file. The file plays OK in any player though. Can anyone suggest any other software?
Spamgourmet
Posted by Alexey in Software, Technology on Сентябрь 7, 2006
Thanks to Yar, I am now a happy user of Spamgourmet. This is a free service that allows you to dynamically create temporary email addresses to be given away. Emails sent to these addresses are forwarded to a single address that you’ve specified in your account settings. Each temporary email address has an initial counter, like 10, which limits number of messages that can be delivered to this address. After counter reaches zero, the address gets disabled and no more emails are forwarded to your main address. The initial value of the counter is specified in the username part of the address itself. For example, something.10.yourusername@spamgourmet.com is associated with spamgourmet’s username yourusername and will last for 10 posts. something could be anything, for example, the name of the company you are giving your email to.
