Sun Certified Business Component Developer

I’ve passed the «Sun Certified Business Component Developer for J2EE 1.3″ today. With amazingly high score of 95% (67 of 70 questions answered correctly). I’m saying amazingly because I did not really expect that. My knowledge of EJB 2.0 faded since I last worked with it (back in 2004). What I did to prepare is I used questions downloaded from ExamCollection.com — 88 questions in total. The quality of answers was rather poor, I found at least 10 incorrect answers, but nevertheless they helped me to identify my weak areas. Then I just briefly scanned these areas in the EJB spec and the preparation was over. Took me four sessions by 1-2 hours each to prepare.
My weakest areas appeared to be:
- Session bean lifecycle — 66% corect answers, 2 questions answered incorrectly
- Transactions — 87% correct answers, 1 question answered incorrectly
All other areas (about 10 more) are topped at 100%.
This time I chose prometric certified test center in Luton (last time it was Wembley). I liked it better: bigger classroom (lit better too) and no problems with parking which is also much cheaper, £1.50 instead of £8 in Wembley.
So… here I am, another certificate at hand, congratulations are gladly accepted!

Real life mis-spellings (saw them during last two days):
- MDB = Massage Driven Bean (sorry this one is Java specific)
- … CMMI curses are available … (from a corporate email)

История немного неприятная, так что если вы едите, то сначала поешьте, а потом возвращайтесь дочитывать. Неделю назад мы заметили, что на дорожке вдоль канала, где мы гуляем, явно воняет разложившимся трупиком. Потом Юля сказала, что видела в канале труп собаки. Пару дней назад мы заметили, что собаку кто-то выращил и бросил в траву у забора. Вонять от этого стало ещё больше. Проходя мимо, я заметил: наверняка кто-то из местных жителей уже заявил в местный горсовет (council, орган, занимающийся всеми городскими делами) и собаку скоро уберут. Юлька съязвила: «А ты заявил? Почему ты думаешь тогда, что кто-то другой это сдалал?» Дома она упомянула тему ещё раз, и я согласился написать электронное письмо в council, больше, честно говоря, для прикола. На следующий день (это было вчера) собаки не было. Совпадение, подумал я. Сегодня звонок из council (я оставил свой номер в письме): мол, собаку убрали, наслаждайтесь. Ха!

Англичане и Modern Talking
Вопрос: как, по вашему мнению, среагирует англичанин, если ему сказать невзначай: «как пел Модерн Токинг в песне ‘Брат Луи’…»? Именно так примерно я заявил в одной беседе за обедом. В ответ — полное недоумение. Два англичанина и один автралиец — никто ни разу не слышал ни их песен, ни даже названия группы. Причина была выяснена быстро — см. статью Modern Talking на wikipedia. Оказывается, в Англии их песни не продвигались, так как коллективу не нравилось, что их продают как гей-группу! В Европе же они были крайне популярны: их там никто голубыми не считал.
Voice of Britain’s Skilled Immigrants

I’ve recently found that the two petitions I signed (I’ve mentioned one of them already) were not just lonely voices of desperate people. Petitions were against a change in the UK immigration law that was applied retrospectively to current Work Permit and HSMP visa holders. A group of volunteers created a web site called Voice of Britain’s Skilled Immigrants (VBSI).
Moreover, in a week there will be a demonstration against this change in front of the Parliament. Hopefully we’ll join them too. Those of you who are in the UK on WP or HSMP, do come across! It is also a good idea to let VBSI know first by emailing them to info@vbsi.org.uk.
Set up the delay before a call is forwarded to voicemal
I found it irritating that 15 seconds delay before calls to my mobile get forwarded to voicemal is too small. Quite often I just can’t get to the phone in time to pick up a call. Here is what T-Mobile support suggested. There is a USSD sequence that you should send in order to increase the delay:
**61*[your voicemal number]**25#
"25" at the end is the number of seconds you want to pass before a call is forwarded to voicemail.
[your voicemal number] should be in international format, without "+" at the beginning. For example, 4406077965423232. Use your phone's call forwarding menu to find your voicemail number.
P.S. I am not sure if this only works for T-Mobile or for any other operator.
Update: Many phones have the options to change it via phone menu:
Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Phone -> Call divert -> Voice calls -> If not answered -> Options -> Activate -> To voice mailbox
There you can select the delay time between 5 and 30 seconds.
